Welcome to the website for the Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Entomology and Plant Pathology at Mississippi State University. This interdisciplinary department was formed in 2011 with the merger of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and the Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology.

The Department offers an undergraduate degree in Biochemistry with 11 different concentrations in which students may choose. Graduate degrees are available in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Entomology and Plant Pathology at both the master's and doctoral level. Check out our degree programs.

Biochemistry is the branch of science concerned with the chemical and physiochemical processes that occur within living organisms. Molecular biology is the branch of biology that deals with the structure and function of macromolecules, like proteins and nucleic acid, that are essential to life. Entomology is the study of insects and the impact they have on the health and economic well-being of mankind. Plant pathology is the study of plant diseases, their causal agents and methods of control.

Mission

The mission of the Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Entomology and Plant Pathology is to advance knowledge and understanding of concepts in these disciplines for the betterment of student and clientele educational pursuits, and to contribute to the improved well-being and prosperity of communities, local and global, through teaching, research and outreach efforts within this interdisciplinary department.

History

Location

Mississippi State University is physically located adjacent to the city of Starkville, Mississippi in the northeastern section of Mississippi.

Our beautiful award-winning campus is home to over 20,000 students and is 23 miles west of Columbus and 125 miles northeast of the capital city of Jackson. With a Carnegie Classification of Doctoral University with Very High Research Activity, Mississippi State University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

The Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Entomology and Plant Pathology is located in two campus locations. Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Plant Pathology are located in Dorman Hall. Entomology is located in the Clay Lyle Entomology Building.
